History of Graphics Design

What do your imagine when you think about graphics design? The complex abstract art or the animated web pages. Graphics design is anything that is drawn by a person on a computer, paper or a stone. This broad area covers even the first letter scribbled by man in the pre stone era or the drawing of the people hunting in caves. This was the beginning of graphics design. IT wasn’t until the 20th century that graphics design was termed by the first graphics designer, Addison Dwiiggs.

Surprised right? It is actually a very old skill that has been developing since ages with many great names associated with it. Great people like Leonardo Da Vince, Picasso and other are part of this. Graphics design took birth somewhere during the 40,00 and 10,000 B.C when people felt the need of a better way to communicate with their own people or when knowledge was passed on from one generation to the other. These were the first graphics designers who took their humble beginnings on rocks, leather clothes, cave walls, boulders, ivory and may be even leaves. They have been successful in leaving their marks in the world. This was developed into actual art which was seen in Egyptian art around 6,000 year. From walls of the pharaohs to pottery that was used, were all pieces of graphics art. During the 600 BC and 250 BC, the geometrical shapes were recognized and its use in arts began in a large way. This art is seen in roman architecture and has been instrumental in creating the art today.

It was in Germany during the 16th century that Johannes Genfleisch created the worlds first printer which began printing books for mass printing. He was a metal worker and an inventor who used this printer to produce the worlds first rpinted book, The Incunabula in the Gutenberg Press. The art of printing developed and kept evolving and is still evolving.
