Basic Typography Guidelines for web Design

A lot of websites make the mistake of paying too much attention to flashy colors or graphics that they end up ruining the whole experience with poor typography. Every website needs text, so it’s important that the typography is creatively managed to make the entire site flow. By following a few basic rules, any site can have good looking typography.

Go through the text

Once the written content is provided, every designer should review it before uploading it all in the font of their choice. More often than not, the right font can be inspired by the text itself. For example, a horror site isn’t going to look good with bubbled fonts filled with bright colors splashed across each page.

Give readers direction

Web design is certainly a creative process, but it is mandatory to have a method for the madness. Visitors should be able to instantly locate the beginning of the content and be able to separate the titles and subheadings from the text. This is where size, length and placement become important in typography.

Make it visible

Nothing ruins a website more than text that isn’t decipherable from the background because it is in a color that blends in. Black and white are the safest colors, and most widely used.

Consider sans serif

Typography is another area where designers can get expressively creative in their work. However, in doing so it is very easy to ruin their work as well. While sans serif is used everywhere, it is for that reason that it’s a safe bet for good typography.

By keeping these few guidelines in mind, any designer can better their work.
